چکیده

Abstract In the Peruvian Andes, first light rainfalls towards end of dry season in August-September are known as pushpa . Softening soils and improving sowing conditions, these rains crucial for planting dates agricultural planning. Yet remains to date unexplored literature. This study uses observations convection-permitting model simulations describe characteristics Rio Santa valley (Peru). Comparing an observed case August 2018 with a wet event same season, we find coincide upper-level westerly winds that otherwise characteristic periods. These conditions impose layer favours small-scale, vertically-capped convection, explaining low rainfall intensities reportedly typical Climatologically, 83% -type events occur under winds, dominating August, when 60% modelled spatial extent is linked Larger, more intense deep-convective gradually increase alongside easterly September, causing relative cloud coverage drop ̃20%. We note high inter-annual -decadal variability this balance between convective types, being twice during 2000-2009 than 2010-2018 decade over key period. result may explain farmers’ perception valley, who recently reported increased challenges due delayed but before rainy start. thus conclude germination crucially affected by rain, resulting higher probability late be intense.

Teleconnections between the Peruvian Central Andes and Northeast Brazil during Extreme Rainfall Events in Austral Summer

Extreme precipitation events in the Peruvian Andes have significant socioeconomic impacts, yet their atmospheric dynamics are poorly understood. Here austral summer (December–March) wet and dry spells and their continentaland large-scale teleconnections are analyzed using reanalysis, gridded, and in situ precipitation data. Dry and wet spells in the Peruvian Andes show a pervasive dipole patter...

Dry and wet rainy seasons in the Mantaro river basin (Central Peruvian Andes)

Monthly precipitation data from the period of 1970 to 2004 from 38 meteorological stations in the Mantaro river basin were used to classify the rainy seasons (September–April) of each year into anomalously dry or wet, and to determine the basin-wide extent of the anomalies based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The wet periods mostly occurred in the early 1970’s and during the fir...

Preceramic irrigation canals in the Peruvian Andes.

One of the most important developments in the existence of human society was the successful shift from a subsistence economy based on foraging to one primarily based on food production derived from cultivated plants and domesticated animals. The shift to plant food production occurred in only a few independent centers around the world and involved a commitment to increased sedentism and social ...

A phytosociological analysis and synopsis of the dry woodlands and succulent vegetation of the Peruvian Andes.

A phytosociological approach to dry forest and cactus communities on the occidental slopes of the Peruvian Andes is presented in base of 164 plots carried out following the Braun-Blanquet method. From them, 52 have been made recently, and the other 112 were taken from the literature. After a multivariate analysis, using a hierarchical clustering and a detendred correspondence analysis, the Acac...

Ecotypic differentiation under farmers' selection: Molecular insights into the domestication of Pachyrhizus Rich. ex DC. (Fabaceae) in the Peruvian Andes

Understanding the distribution of crop genetic diversity in relation to environmental factors can give insights into the eco-evolutionary processes involved in plant domestication. Yam beans (Pachyrhizus Rich. ex DC.) are leguminous crops native to South and Central America that are grown for their tuberous roots but are seed-propagated. Using a landscape genetic approach, we examined correlati...
